Kate Elizabeth Winslet

Born 5 October 1975
Kate Elizabeth Winslet is an English actress and occasional singer. Winslet made her screen debut at the age of nineteen, starring in Peter Jackson's Heavenly Creatures (1994). She achieved recognition in a supporting role in Ang Lee's adaption of Sense and Sensibility (1995) and her role as Rose DeWitt Bukater in Titanic (1997).

Sexiness

We have always been fans of voluptuous women, and apparent
ly so was this week's voting panel, who simply remarked, "she looks sexy in the way a woman is supposed to look sexy." How can we top that?

Kate Winslet Quotes

"I like exposing myself. Ther
e's not an awful lot that embarrasses me. I'm the kind of actress that absolutely believes in exposing myself. "

"I'd rather do theater and British films than move to L.A. in hopes of getting small roles in American films."

"I don't think I will get naked in a movie again. I can't keep getting away with it and I don't want to become 'that actress who always gets her kit off'."

"I don't feel like (a movie star) in my life at all, and I don't particularly think I behave like one. I don't have my own pl
ane. I don't have a chef or a trainer. To me, you're a movie star only during the time when you're at the Academy Awards or at an important glamorous event. It's very much a hat that you wear, and as soon as the event's over, that hat comes off. I'm back to being me and being Mummy, and that's my priority."

"Cameron Diaz could eat me under a table"

"I never had huge ambitions - never. I was fat. I didn't know any fat famous actresses. I just did not see myself in that world at all, and I'm being very sincere. You know, once a fat kid, always a fat kid. And I still sort of have that. I often look at women who wear great jeans and high heels and nice little T-shirts wandering around the city and I think, I should make more of an effort."

"The whole concept of 'grounding' children is utterly stupid. They just go off and rebel and don't like you. When my kids eventually come along, I don't want them to not like me
."

"Plastic surgery and breast
implants are fine for people who want that, if it makes them feel better about who they are. But, it makes these people, actors especially, fantasy figures for a fantasy world. Acting is about being real being honest. "

Kate Winslet made her debut at age 11, when she costarred with the "Honey Monster" in a commercial for a children's breakfast. After acting lessons and a graduation from a performing arts high school, Kate Winslet took to the stage in productions of Adrian Mole and Peter Pan.

Kate Winslet then took the television route, with appearances on sitcoms, most notably a recurring role on the British comedy, Get Back. Kate went from a rather dark role in the 1994 film Heavenly Creatures (as a teen involved in a murder), to the more children-oriented A Kid in King Arthur's Court, where she starred as Princess Sarah.

The British actress' career was about to rise after Kate Winslet was cast as Marianne Dashwood in the adaptation of Jane Austen's period piece, Sense and Sensibility, sharing the screen with Emma Thompson and Hugh Grant.

The film's producers and director, Ang Lee, knew that Kate was the one for the part during her audition, and to underscore that decision, she received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

Kate Winslet may have lost the Oscar, but she did win the Screen Actors Guild for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role, and a British Academy of Film and Television Arts Best Supporting Actress Award, both for Sense and Sensibility.

As even more evidence that Kate Winslet was a natural in a corset, she next starred in two more period pieces in 1996: Jude (based on the novel Jude the Obscure), and Hamlet (the one with Kenneth Branagh), where she starred as the tragic Ophelia.

Budgeted at $16,500,000, the film became a financial and critical success, resulting in a worldwide box office total of $135 million

In 1997, Kate Winslet plunged into the icy waters and made movie history as the heroine of James Cameron's mega-movie Titanic. Her role as Rose DeWitt Bukater not only made her the envy of teenage girls worldwide (for getting to share breathing space with Leonardo DiCaprio), but it also marked her transition from artsy, independent films, to commercial blockbuster flicks. She received another Oscar nod, this time in the Best Supporting Actress category, making her the youngest actress to receive two Oscar nominations.

However, Kate chose the road less traveled by supposedly refusing the lead roles in Shakespeare in Love (Gwyneth sure owes her a big thank-you) and Anna and the King, in order to star in two more alternative, independent films: Hideous Kinky (1998) and Holy Smoke (1999).

2000 saw Kate in yet another period piece: the critically acclaimed Quills. She then appeared in Enigma (2001), Iris (2001), The Life of David Gale (2003), and was heard in the animated feature Flushed Away (2006), with Hugh Jackman.

Delving into children-oriented films isn't a bad idea, since Kate Winslet is also mother to Mia (her daughter with ex-husband Jim Threapleton) and Joe (her son with husband Sam Mendes).

Music
Winslet has enjoyed a brief taste of success as a singer, with her single What If from the soundtrack of Christmas Carol: The Movie, which reached #1 in Ireland, #6 in the UK and won the 2002 OGAE Song Contest.[66] She also filmed a music video for the song. She participated in a duet with "Weird Al" Yankovic on the Sandra Boynton CD Dog Train, and sang in the 2006 film Romance & Cigarettes. She also sang an aria from La Bohème, called "Sono Andati", in her film Heavenly Creatures, which is featured on the film's soundtrack. She was considered for the lead in Moulin Rouge! (which eventually went to Nicole Kidman); had she taken the part, she would have sung the full soundtrack.

on walking the red carpet
One of the great, 'OK, you can breathe now moments,' is when you've gotten through the red carpet. It's like, 'Oh God, what if I trip over, what if I say something stupid, I wonder if they can see the big zit on my chin?' The relief moment is that moment when you get in the doors and there aren't any cameras and you go, 'Phew! Where's the bathroom?'

Kate on receiving her 4th Oscar nomination
I can't believe it. I am ecstatic! This nomination means so much to me. To be remembered for a film that was released a while ago, I am unbelievably honoured and completely overwhelmed.

on friend and co-star Leonardo DiCaprio
It sounds naff to say this, but we are really like brother and sister. We've shared so much, I mean, on a personal level. He's got loads of my secrets, and I've got heaps of his, and I'd never tell a soul.

on winning over a British magazine that said she was consulting a diet doctor
I am delighted that this matter has been resolved, and the record set straight. I am not a hypocrite. I have always been, and shall continue to be, honest when it comes to body/weight issues.

on going naked in the film The Reader
It was the same as shooting any other scene of that nature. A scene with that level of intimacy involving nudity, you know, it's always nerve-wracking, and you really have to rehearse those scenes so that everybody knows exactly what's going on.

on a nude scene in Holy Smoke
It was a difficult scene. When I read the script and I saw this scene was there, I laughed hysterically. I just couldn't believe it. When it came to shooting it, I had been sort of putting it off, and pretending it wasn't going to happen. And suddenly, I am there naked, peeing and thinking "Oh no!" It was really hard to do, but I've always loved the fact that it was there, and it's such a sort of turning point for the character I play in the movie that I've always felt sort of good, that it should be there.

Awards and nominations

Winslet won an Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in The Reader, as well as two Golden Globe Awards, one in the category of Best Actress (Drama) for her performance in Revolutionary Road, the other in the Best Supporting Actress category for The Reader. She has won two BAFTA Awards: Best Actress for The Reader, and Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Sense and Sensibility (1995). She earned a total of six Academy Award nominations, seven Golden Globe nominations, and seven BAFTA nominations.

She has received numerous awards from other organizations, including the Los Angeles Film Critics' Association (LAFCA) award for Best Supporting Actress for Iris (2001) and the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role for Sense and Sensibility (1995) and The Reader (2008). For Holy Smoke! (1999), she was declared Best Actress runner-up by both the New York Film Critics' Circle (NYFCC) and the National Society of Film Critics (NSFC). Winslet was also NYFCC's Best Actress runner-up for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004). Premiere magazine named her performance as Clementine Kruczynski in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind the 81st greatest film performance of all time.

With her Best Actress nomination for The Reader, Winslet became the youngest actor to receive six Oscar nominations. At age 33, she passed the mark formerly held by Bette Davis, who was 34 when she received her sixth nomination for her performance in Now, Voyager (1942). Winslet previously set the marks as the youngest actress to receive two nominations for her performance in Titanic (1997), and the youngest actor of either gender to receive four and five nominations, for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and Little Children (2006), respectively. Winslet was 26 when she received her third nomination, for Iris, missing the mark of Natalie Wood, who received her third nomination at age 25.

In 2000, Winslet won a Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word Album for Children for Listen To the Storyteller. Winslet was nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for playing herself in a 2005 episode of Extras.
