Beard made her first Olympic appearance at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games at the age of 14, while a student at Irvine High School in Irvine, California. She won silver medals in the 100-meter and 200-meter breaststrokes, and a gold in the medley relay. Her young-teen manner captured the attention of the media, and she was often photographed clutching her teddy bear, even on the medal stand. Allison Stokke is an American pole vaulter from Orange County, California.

In 2004, Stokke won a California state championship at age 15, and broke several national records in her age division. Her 2005 season was hampered by an injury, as she broke her right tibia in May. As a senior at Newport Harbor High School, her personal best was 13' 7" (4.14 m), the second-best mark in the nation for a female senior in that calendar year.

In May 2007, Stokke won the CIF-Southern Section Masters meet.

In June, Stokke advanced to the CIF State Championship finals by clearing 12' 3" (3.73 m), and eventually finished fourth in the competition that was won by Tori Anthony. Stokke said that her legs had been hurting for a while, which interfered with her sprinting down the runway. She plans to vault for UC Berkeley in 2008.

Stokke grew up as a gymnast, and attempted pole vaulting her freshman year of high school, setting a school record only two months after her start. She would win the state championship three months later, she set a national record for her age group in her sophomore year, at 12' 8".

Ranked number two in the state of California, Stokke recovered from a broken tibia her sophomore year to set a personal record of 13' 7". In 1986, Anna became a member of the prestigious Spartak Tennis Club, coached by Larissa Preobrazhenskaya. In 1989, at the tender age of eight, Anna began appearing in junior tournaments, and by the following year, was attracting attention from tennis scouts across the world. Anna signed a management deal at age ten and went to Bradenton, Florida to train at Nick Bollettieri's celebrated tennis academy.

Following her arrival in the United States, Anna exploded onto the tennis scene, making her the internationally recognized tennis star she is today. At the age of 14, she went on to win the European Championships and the Italian Open Junior tournament. Anna also beat out the competition to win the prestigious Junior Orange Bowl, becoming the youngest player ever to win the 18 and under division at that tournament. By the end of the year, Anna was crowned the ITF Junior World Champion U-18 and Junior European Champion U-18.

In 1994, Anna Kournikova received a wild card into ITF tournament in Moscow qualifications, but lost to the third seed Sabine Appelmans.
